Gataca Badge Hub: Verifiable Credentials Meet Open Badges
March 23, 2025

Gataca has launched Badge Hub, a solution that integrates Self-Sovereign Identity technology with Open Badges.
It allows institutions to issue Verifiable Credentials (VCs) while giving users a visually appealing and shareable way to showcase their achievements.
An Open Badge is a digital credential that visually represents an achievement, skill, or certification while embedding verifiable metadata about the issuer, recipient, and criteria behind it.
Why should your institution use Badge Hub?
With Badge Hub, users can have their accomplishments as verifiable credentials in their ID Wallets, in compliance with eIDAS 2.0, while easily sharing them as Open Badges on LinkedIn, personal websites, and other platforms—increasing both visibility and credibility.
How it works?
- Request: The user requests a Verifiable Credential from an institution or organization.
- Issuance & Badge Creation: The credential is issued to the user's ID Wallet through Gataca's Credential Issuance Service and automatically linked to an Open Badge. The badge is securely emailed with a unique VC-linked URL for easy sharing across platforms. The Open Badge link remains in the VC, allowing users to share it anytime.
- Verification: Organizations, such as employers, can verify this credential instantly using Gataca's Credential Verification Service, ensuring data authenticity and integrity. For Open Badge verification, Gataca's badge visualization service and the VC-linked badge enable easy validation, reinforcing trust and automation in academic and professional accreditation.
Badge Hub is an add-on that you can integrate directly into the credential issuance process within Gataca Studio.
Like Verifiable Credentials, Open Badges are customizable, allowing institutions to incorporate their branding into their credentialing experience.
Moreover, Gataca complies with eIDAS 2.0, allowing institutions that use our platform to meet the highest security standards and have their credentials legally recognized across the EU.
Applications
While Open Badges are widely used in education, their utility extends across multiple industries:
- Corporate Training – Companies can issue badges for employee training, certifications, and professional development milestones.
- Industry Certifications – Compliance organizations can recognize professional certifications with verifiable digital badges.
- Gaming – Platforms can issue badges for in-game achievements, rankings, and community contributions.
- Volunteer Recognition – Nonprofits can acknowledge volunteer efforts with digital badges, adding value to community engagement and personal development.
With Badge Hub, institutions can issue verifiable credentials and open badges, allowing users to present their achievements in a format that suits their needs and ensuring credentials are verifiable and easily shareable across digital platforms.
